Endoscopic band ligation of gastric varices

Tuesday 19 May 2009, Branislav Kunčak, M. D.

Gastric varix (GOV 1) with adherent clot in a patient with cirrhosis who presented with hematemesis and melena. Both esophageal and gastric varices were ligated.

Gastric variceal ligation (GVL):

  • is an alternative endoscopic method for the management of bleeding gastric varices
  • is eqaully effective in achieving haemostasis as glue injection, but is associated with higher rebleeding rate
