Esophageal stent to treat esophageal variceal bleeding

Thursday 02 April 2009, Rudolf Hrčka, M. D., CSc and Boris Pekárek, M. D.

Self-expandable nitinol esophageal stent for treatment of variceal bleeding.

Self-expandable nitinol stent (SX-ELLA Stent Danis ) was used in a patient with cirrhosis and uncontrollable esophageal variceal bleeding as a rescue procedure.

Danis stent

  • Removable stent for treatment of bleeding esophageal varices
  • Secure hemostasis through direct compression of varices
  • Contraindications are esophageal strictures, recent radiotherapy of the esophagus, tumors of the upper respiratory tract, esophagus or stomach
  • Implantation is possible without the need for endoscopy or X-Ray control

Several pilot studies suggests that the method is effective and safe, but these results will have to be confirmed by further comparative studies carried out on a larger number of patients.
