Tuesday 24 March 2009, Branislav Kunčak, M. D.

Benign esophageal stenoses

Benign esophageal stenoses can occur anywhere in the esophagus, but distal part of the esophagus is the most common location of the stenosis. In the distal esophagus the most common cause of the stenosis is gastroesophageal reflux (GER).

Causes of stenosis in the proximal part of the esophagus are

  • gastroesophageal reflux (GER)
  • heterotopic gastric mucosa
  • corrosive injury
  • post-radiation
  • web

Endoscopic dilatation is the treatment of choice.
