Eosinophilic esophagitis

Wednesday 22 July 2009, Ján Benko, M. D.

Histologic features of eosinophilic esophagitis:

  • marked eosinophilic infiltration of the squamous epithelium (biopsy specimen taken from the upper and mid portions of the esophagus)
  • >20 eosinophils per HPF in a single field or >15 eosinophils per HPF in two fields

Eosinophilic infiltrate of the epithelium may be found also with reflux esophagitis. Although the infiltrate is mainly in the epithelium of the distal esophagus and is at a much lower density.
